Sketch comedy has been a popular form of entertainment for centuries. It can be traced back to ancient Greece, where writers such as Aristophanes wrote comedic plays that often featured characters in outrageous costumes and situations. In the Middle Ages, jugglers and troubadours performed skits that poked fun at current events and local personalities. By the Renaissance, commedia dell’arte was a well-established form of theatre in Italy, featuring stock characters such as the clever servant Arlecchino and the love-struck Pierrot.

In the 18th century, British playwrights such as Oliver Goldsmith and Richard Sheridan began writing comedies that featured short scenes or “sketches” of everyday life.
